FC Groningen defender Virgil van Dijk has revealed that Scottish giants Celtic would be an ideal club that will help him improve and mature as a player.

The Dutch Under-21 international has been linked with the Scottish Premier League winners, and the Eredivisie side have confirmed there is interest from a foreign club.

The 21-year-old has now admitted that Celtic is a fantastic club, and moving there would be an important step for him.

"Celtic is a fantastic club and a step up for me", Van Dijk told Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

"I have to wait until the clubs come together."

The centre-back started his youth career with Williem II in 2009, before moving to play for the Green-White Army the following year.

It is believed that the Celts have filed two bids for the player this summer, and both clubs are on the verge of an agreement.

Groningen are thought ready to settle for €3m for the defender, who could undergo a medical at Celtic Park later this week.

Van Dijk clocked up 32 appearances in the Dutch top flight in the 2012/13 season, scoring twice and assisting three times.

Groningen finished seventh in the Eredivisie last season.
