English Premier League side Stoke City have announced that 30-year-old English winger Jermaine Pennant has signed a one-year contract with the club.

New Potters manager Mark Hughes has handed the former Arsenal and Liverpool winger a fresh start at the Britannia Stadium after he was initially scheduled to be released.

The winger was due to be released by the club following the end of the 2012/13 campaign, but he will now remain until next summer.

Pennant has been with the club since August 2010 – when he agreed on a four-month loan from Spanish side Real Zaragoza. The signing was made permanent in December that year.

“I’ve admired Jermaine from afar and there is no question about his ability”, Hughes told his club’s official site.

“I am looking to introduce more creativity and attacking options to the side, qualities Jermaine can certainly offer us.”

“I had a very positive meeting with him and it’s now up to him to show everyone what he is capable of doing”, the Welshman added.

Pennant moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three month loan deal in October last year. He clocked up a total of 15 appearances for Wolves in the Championship, assisting once.

However, at Stoke he appeared just twice under former manager Tony Pulis, upon returning from his loan spell.

He has made more than 70 appearances for Stoke, and also started the game for the Potters in the 2011 FA Cup final – in which they lost 1-0 to Manchester City.
