Newcastle United have appointed former interim manager Joe Kinnear as their new director of football on a three-year deal.
Kinnear has had a long career within football, both as a player and manager, as he ended a 10-year association with Tottenham Hotspur in 1975 and spent a year at Brighton before retiring from the game.
He then had management stints with several clubs including seven years with Wimbledon – now MK Dons – and eventually took on temporary duties at St. James’ Park following Kevin Keegan’s exit in 2008.
Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias today told the club’s official site: "The board are pleased to welcome Joe back to the club.

"Joe has many years of experience working within the game, and this experience will be of great benefit to the Club in achieving our objectives over the coming seasons."
Kinnear is expected to be in charge of all football-related activities at St. James’ Park, and according to the club, will report directly to the board.
Kinnear’s time with the Magpies in 2008 had begun on an unsavoury note, when a heated exchange with journalists at a press conference became public news.
Meanwhile, on the pitch Newcastle failed to live up to expectations despite pulling off a few surprise results.
Kinnear suffered health problems towards the end of the season, and the role at Newcastle was taken over by former striker Alan Shearer.
