Arsenal and Liverpool may be dealt a blow in their pursuit of Lyon star Clement Grenier, with the playmaker looking at a possible extension to his deal at the Ligue 1 club, according to French sports daily L’Equipe.
Grenier’s future has been much discussed this summer, as Arsenal have been frequently linked with the Frenchman, with Liverpool recently joining the race, on the back of the midfielder’s successful season at the Stade Gerland.
With 28 league appearances and seven goals, it was also little wonder that the Gunners were joined by Liverpool in the race for his services.
His contract at Lyon is set to run out next year, and rather than risk losing him on a free transfer, the former French champions could implement a 12-month extension.

It will mean a deal until 2015 for Grenier, who graduated to the senior team in 2008 and has made healthy progress to clock 75 games in total.
The player’s father had previously stated he would not make the move abroad just yet, even as Arsenal were prepared to spend big.
His agent, however, has indicated Lyon will have to work hard to keep the talented 22-year-old.
Grenier has set his personal sights on making the World Cup squad with France next year – he currently has two senior caps – and a successful tournament could see his value rise further.
He has made an impact at youth level for France, with 19 games from the Under-17 level upwards.
