Leeds United ambassador Dominic Matteo has explained that it is important for the team to get a good start to the new season.

The Peacocks start their 2013/14 campaign in the Championship against Brighton – who finished fourth in the league last season – on 3rd August at Elland Road.

The Yorkshire giants, under former Reading manager Brian McDermott, finished 13th last season, with 61 points – just seven above the relegation zone. Matteo has stressed the importance of a good start, and he also believes that the club can live up to that expectation.

"If you get off to a bad start it can be tough to pick up the pace", Matteo, a former Leeds skipper, told his club’s official site.

"I just believe that we can get off to a good start.

"A lot of managers I played under were always about starting the season as we want to carry on. It can be difficult once you get into a bad run of form to get out.”

The Scotsman is also optimistic about his side ahead of pre-season, which starts in July, and also hopes that the players will not suffer injuries.

"The lads will come back fit and hopefully we’ll be lucky with injuries over the pre-season period and we bring some new players in.

"I’m excited about next season but I’m always excited about a new season, it’s a fresh start and a chance at getting promoted again”, he added.
