Newcastle United managing director Derek Llambias has resigned from his position, just a day after controversial figure Joe Kinnear was appointed the club’s new director of football.

Speculation around Tyneside had indicated that all was not well in the relationship between Llambias and Kinnear, with a radio interview given by the latter generating much attention.

Kinnear is purported to have mispronounced several names of players within Newcastle’s squad, and that of Llambias in the interview.

And while there is no official reason given by the club over Llambias’ resignation, he did make a statement via their official site.

"I have had an incredible journey during my five years at the club, including some challenging times", Llambias said.

"I will reflect with great fondness on my time in the North East and, in me, Newcastle United have a lifelong supporter.

"I want to thank the staff for their hard work, our fans for their support of the club, and wish them all well for the future."

Kinnear’s appointment to the post yesterday has been met with some consternation, especially in relation to a heated exchange with journalists from 2008, when he was made interim manager.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player is set to be in executive charge of all football-related affairs for the Magpies, and will report directly to the club’s board.
