Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand remains optimistic about his club’s chances of retaining the Premier League crown under new manager David Moyes, adding that the new Old Trafford boss is "not naive".

Moyes was appointed Manchester United manager and given a stable six-year deal after the dramatic departure and retirement of long-time boss Sir Alex Ferguson last month.

And while critics from across the football world have already had their say on the new era on the red side of Manchester, Ferdinand believes the worst-comes-to-worst predictions on Moyes may not be as clear-cut as many believe.

"I’d like to think [we can win the title with Moyes]", Ferdinand told the BBC.

"I’m sure the manager is not naive. I would not want anyone else to be naive and think the new manager is going to come in and make wholesale changes", the ex-England international added.

Ferdinand also reiterated Manchester United’s squad depth, insisting that the club have a good chance come next season under new management.

"We are the defending champions, so there is not a lot wrong with the squad", Ferdinand concluded.
