Sunderland have added a sixth name to their summer transfer list in Swedish striker David Moberg Karlsson, as manager Paolo Di Canio hopes a home start to the new campaign will prove a lucky sign.

The Italian faced a minor rebellion from his players at the end of the last campaign after issuing strict guidelines on punishments for errant behaviour, leading to questions over cooperation.

Since surviving relegation, he has brought in six players to shore up both Sunderland’s defence and attack, most recently with the capture of forward Karlsson from IFK Gothenburg.

Karlsson’s transfer was confirmed yesterday, as he agreed a four-year deal for an officially undisclosed fee, and he arrives at just 19 years of age.

He has turned out a total of 35 times for Gothenburg, scoring five goals, and helped the club to victory in the Swedish Cup last month.

And yesterday’s publication of the new-season fixtures means Sunderland will be employing their new-found health for the first time with a home clash against Fulham.

Former West Ham striker Di Canio told Sunderland’s official site: "We have to integrate the new players into the team, continue to build and develop our squad and complete our pre-season training.

"I’m very excited and, of course, it’s fantastic to start at home in front of our own fans.

"But there is a lot of work to do between now and Fulham; there are many steps. There is a lot of hard work but we are ready for it."
