Chelsea’s highly-rated Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is set to enjoy his third loan spell with La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid, the Spanish club have announced.

Courtois, 21, has already had two loan spells with Los Rojiblancos during the last two consecutive seasons. In his time at the Vicente Calderon from the beginning of the 2011 to 2013, the young custodian made a total 98 appearances.

The chances of Courtois staying in Spain took a downward turn when it was revealed that Mourinho has plans for the goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge but Atletico did finally manage to convince Chelsea that a third season-long loan for the 21-year-old with Los Rojiblancos was best.

"The continuation of Thibaut’s stay with our club was one of our priorities for this season", Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero said in a statement.

"We are very pleased to have him for another year. He has played with almost his everything and has given us great confidence with both his reflexes and game", Caminero added.

Courtois, for his part, is delighted that the deal is over the line, saying: "I am very happy because it’s what I wanted. I’ve always said that I wanted to continue next season at Atletico and play in a competition as important as the Champions League after getting to it so brilliantly.

"I just think about giving enjoyment to the club’s amazing fans and hopefully we can continue to give a lot more."
