Championship side Brighton have sacked manager Gus Poyet, but the Uruguayan can appeal the decision.

Poyet found himself suspended by Brighton last month, along with his assistant Mauricio Taricco and first team coach Charlie Oatway, although the club did not reveal their reasons for doing so.

The Championship side have now decided to terminate the 45-year-old’s contract and will seek to appoint an interim manager while Poyet appeals.

"Gus Poyet has been informed by the club’s internal disciplinary panel his employment has been terminated", the club announced.

"Mr Poyet now has a right of appeal.

"Given the close proximity of the new season, the club will, in conjunction with its board, now seek to appoint an interim manager pending the outcome of a possible appeal.

"The interim manager will oversee the initial weeks of pre-season preparation alongside the club’s existing staff."

Poyet led Brighton to promotion to the Championship from League One in 2011, before guiding them to a fourth place finish last season.
