New Everton manager Roberto Martinez has heaped praise on the passion for football in England and claimed that he finds it fascinating.

Having started his playing career with Spanish club Real Zaragoza, the 39-year old was first introduced to British football in 1995 when he was signed by Wigan Athletic, a fourth tier club at the time.

He spent six years at the club before plying his trade with Motherwell, Walsall, Swansea City and Chester City.

He hung up his boots in 2007 and became the manager of Swansea City. After winning the League One championship with the Welsh side, the Spaniard joined Wigan Athletic in 2009.

Martinez helped to save his club from relegation for three consecutive seasons and also won the FA Cup in his final year beating Manchester City in the final but could not help Wigan from beating the drop.

Martinez was quoted as saying, “I think it’s the passion for the game that we have here – I don’t think we have that in any other country.

“There are always aspects that are fascinating in any part of the world where football is played, but a combination of that passion, the way the game is lived and the way that we have a real mixture of styles and ways of playing. For me, that is fascinating.

“That’s probably why I’ve never wanted to be away from football here from the moment that I arrived in 1995. The British game is a real reference in world football and I always encourage everyone to try it and experiment here because it is unique.”

Martinez’s first home game in charge of Everton at Goodison Park will be against West Bromwich Albion on 24th August and he believes that the fans will back his team in achieving their objectives in the forthcoming season.

“It’s going to be special”, he told Everton TV. “I do feel Goodison Park plays a massive part in the running of the team and the results of the team.

“As always it is about the players and about them developing that enjoyment of representing their football club and making sure the fans are right behind them. That way we can become a very strong team and enjoy our football.”
