Real Madrid have successfully fended off interest from Liverpool in 16-year-old playmaker Mario Rodriguez.

Liverpool, who have been alive to the youngster’s talent in recent months, offered Rodriguez double the salary he currently earns at the Bernabeu to continue his career in England.

However, according to Spanish daily Marca, Real Madrid reacted quickly when they became aware of Liverpool’s approach.

Now Rodriguez will remain at the Bernabeu for at least the next four years.

Rodriguez has developed rapidly over the last 12 months, operating as a playmaker with a keen attacking instinct.

He turned out for Real Madrid’s Cadet A team last season, a side which suffered just one defeat in 30 games.

Los Blancos will be delighted at having seen off Liverpool’s interest in Rodriguez, but are well aware their young talents continue to be targeted by Premier League clubs.
