Manchester United officials are set to hold an informal meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo in the next few days, amid reports that the Portuguese could make a surprise return to Old Trafford, according to Spanish daily El Pais.
Ronaldo has spent the last four seasons in Madrid, following his superb rise at Manchester United, but is yet to sign an extension to his contract, which currently runs until 2015.
Earlier this month, the winger was quick to stamp out talk that an extension had been signed, even as club president Florentino Perez vowed to retain the star at any cost.
While Ronaldo has maintained he will eventually pen the contract extension, reports have surfaced that Manchester United could plot a swoop for the player who achieved many successes in England.

It is understood that if a move is not possible this summer, then Manchester United will be looking at a transfer in January 2015, when the player will be free to sign a pre-contract if no extension has taken place at Real Madrid.
FIFA rules prohibit a player under contract at a club from speaking officially with other teams unless agreed upon by both parties.
However, El Pais suggest an attempt to work around the rule, by way of an unofficial meeting at an undisclosed location.
Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United saw him notch 117 goals in 290 games in all competitions, with no less than three Premier League titles, an FA Cup win, two League Cups and a Champions League crown added to his individual honours.
His successes in England were not reflected when he moved to Los Blancos, as the club has only managed one league title since he joined in 2009, in addition to the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
