Manchester United have confirmed the departure of first team coach Rene Meulensteen from Old Trafford.

The Dutch tactician has been continually linked with leaving the Red Devils since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager last month, with David Moyes succeeding the veteran Scot.

Under Ferguson, Meulensteen had taken a hands-on role at training, while it is understood Moyes intends to be actively involved in this area, limiting the Dutchman's job.

Now, with Meulensteen believed to be ready to join Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala to become part of Guus Hiddink's staff, Manchester United have confirmed his departure.

"I'd like to thank Rene for his contribution to the club, particularly since he returned to Old Trafford in 2007", the club's CEO Ed Woodward said.

"He has been first-team coach for five years and in that time has given great assistance to Sir Alex Ferguson and Mike Phelan in keeping the team at the top of the game not only in this country but in Europe as well.

"On behalf of everyone at United, I wish him well for the future."

And Meulensteen commented: "I would like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson, the owners, all colleagues, players and fans who made my time at Manchester United very special and one I will never forget. I wish everyone at this great football club all the best."
