Real Madrid sporting director Zinedine Zidane is set to be given a bump up to the job of assistant to new manager Carlo Ancelotti, with an appointment expected later today, according to French radio station RMC.

Zidane had been the sporting director at Real Madrid, while the club’s former stalwart has long been tipped as a future coach.

He had briefly become a possibility as manager this season itself when Real Madrid were uncertain over Ancelotti’s arrival, thanks to events unfolding at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Ancelotti was yesterday confirmed as Real Madrid’s manager on a three-year deal, with a press conference set for today to unveil him.

And Zidane is expected to be named as his assistant at the same press conference, rekindling a relationship the pair have had since their Juventus days.

Ancelotti had been manager of Juventus when Zidane was troubling defences around Serie A, with the Frenchman making 79 appearances under him.

Zidane’s stellar playing career saw him win the World Cup with France in 1998, and he went on to win the Champions League with Real Madrid to add to his various league titles across Europe.

He has already been playing a key role for the Spanish giants in the summer transfer window, including attempts to woo Malaga’s Isco to snub Manchester City and move to the Spanish capital.
