Free agent Eric Abidal wants to join newly promoted Ligue 1 club AS Monaco.
The left-back is yet to sign a contract with Monaco but remains ‘optimistic’, while at the same time admitting that it is hard to wait.
Abidal started his career with Monaco as he gradually moved up through the club’s youth system and played in the senior team from 2000 to 2002.
The 33-year-old told French TV channel RTL that he wishes to play in Ligue 1, particularly with Monaco, with whom he has already passed a medical but is yet to be offered a contract.

Claude Puel, manager of another Ligue 1 club, Nice, is also interested in procuring the services of Abidal.
The defender was quoted as saying: “I do not have a contract and I also have other opportunities.”
Abidal, whose preference is Monaco, claims that the contract contains many clauses due to his health despite him going to see specialists and being physically fine.
“Everyone is worried over my health [he underwent a liver transplant in April 2012, ed.]
“I went to the U.S. to see specialists. I do sport. Everything is fine physically, but on contracts there are many clauses. Everything depends on AS Monaco, I give them my preference.”
He concluded by saying that if the move fails, he will look for another opportunity.
