Werder Bremen have completed their third summer signing under new manager Robin Dutt, with Italy Under-21 captain Luca Caldirola joining on a four-year deal.

Caldirola, who skippered Italy at the European Under-21 Championship where they lost to Spain in the final, had been on loan at Serie B side Brescia Calcio from parent club Inter Milan.

While he has only managed one appearance for Inter, his tally for Brescia is 38 games with a stint at Cesena also yielding 19 games.

The centre-back’s transfer means Werder Bremen have secured a player each across the positional spectrum, with forward Nils Petersen arriving from Bayern Munich, and midfielder Cedric Makiadi from Freiburg.

"Werder Bremen have given me a great opportunity", Caldirola was quoted on the Bundesliga site as saying. "When my agent told me Bremen were interested, I said straight away that I’d like to join them.

"Werder are a club with a great tradition and I’m really looking forward to the years ahead."

The 22-year-old has also spent time in the top flight, albeit in the Eredivisie, when he played a season for Vitesse Arnhem.

He made just 11 appearances for Vitesse in 2010/11, but has impressed his new employers overall.

Werder Bremen sporting director Thomas Eichin added: "Luca Caldirola is a very interesting player, with a lot of experience despite his youth.

"He is captain of the Under-21s and has already demonstrated his leadership qualities at club level. His potential was evident at the recent European Under-21 Championship.

"He has got excellent technique and a real flair for opening things up from the back. We’re very happy he has chosen to come to Werder Bremen."
