Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi believes that German teams are not at the top of the game presently, despite two Bundesliga sides featuring in last season’s Champions League final.

Ruhr giants Borussia Dortmund faced Munich heavyweights Bayern Munich in a mouthwatering Der Klassiker final last month at Wembley. The Bavarians, led by former manager Jupp Heynckes, edged past their rivals 2-1 and lifted the coveted trophy.

They also secured the Bundesliga title, as well as the German Cup in the 2012/13 season, achieving a historic treble.

"There has been talk about German football [that they are at the top], but I disagree”, Messi was quoted as saying by A Bola.

“They have great teams, but internationally there are many who are at the top. But yes, I recognise that this year the German teams did well”, the Argentina skipper added.

Spanish tactician Pep Guardiola – who led Barcelona to three La Liga titles, as well as two Champions League crowns and two FIFA Club World Cups, between 2008 and 2012, was officially unveiled as the new head coach of the Munich outfit this week, following a year-long sabbatical.

Messi, who scaled new heights under Guardiola, also believes that the Bavarians can only improve under his tutelage.

Bayern Munich start their campaign in the upcoming Bundesliga season against Borussia Monchengladbach on 9th August at the Allianz Arena.

They also face Europa League 2013 winners Chelsea at the Eden Arena in Prague on 30th August, in a the UEFA Super Cup clash.
