Everton’s Leighton Baines, who was the subject of a recent bid from Manchester United, has explained he is eager to play under new boss Roberto Martinez.

The 28-year-old spoke with Martinez last week and the conversation has made Baines enthusiastic for the upcoming season.

The left-back believes that the Spaniard’s style of management will gel well with the present Everton side and the Merseyside club can hope for success under their new boss.

He told the club’s official site:”Straight from the off he was one of the first names linked with the job and your feeling straight away was that he’d be a great appointment. He’s got a different style than the one we’ve been used to in [terms] of his play, but I think it’s progressive and it will move us forward.

“We’ve got good players here at the club who could probably execute the style of play better than the players he’s worked with before, without being disrespectful to them, and I think it’s exciting for the players as well to be able to try that now.

”We had a chat on the phone last week about the start of the season, looking forward to getting back and looking forward to working with each other and things like that.

“Anyone you speak to only says great things about him, as a manager and as a person as well, so that’s all positive. It’s exciting times now for him and for us to start looking forward to working with each other.”

Martinez has made it clear that he intends to bring in new players to the club and that he has to act quickly to identify potential targets.

Baines’ also admits that some swift transfer activity could be good for the team’s pre-season preparations and added that he is eager to welcome any new face to Everton.

“I’m sure the manager will have identified his targets now, people who he wants to bring in, and I think all managers like to get their business done early if possible”, he said. “It’s a stressful time for managers, the transfer window, so if we can get them in, it’s better for the team.

”It doesn’t always work out that way but hopefully the manager, if he has identified players, he’ll get the ones he wants and we can all start working together.”

The England international, who is contracted at Everton until 30th June 2015, has amassed more than 240 appearances for the club and scored 22 goals since signing from Wigan Athletic in 2007.
