Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp could not help but be delighted as he snapped up ex-Newcastle United defender Danny Simpson on a free transfer, adding that the player would prove to be a "great acquisition".

Simpson, 26, made a total 26 appearances for the Magpies during the 2012/13 campaign, making four assists along the way.

But after well over three years of service with the club, the Tyneside heavyweights have decided to let go of the Salford-born defender on a free transfer.

QPR were only too pleased to offer Simpson a chance to get back into professional football as quickly as possible, with the deal finally pushed over the line earlier in the week.

"I think he’ll be a great acquistion for us, that’s why we want him at the club and I think he’s a fantastic free transfer", Redknapp told his club’s official feed.

"Well, he’s an experienced player, Danny. You know, he’s done a good job at Newcastle, played with a Newcastle side that just missed out on the top four last [2011/12 season], played every game almost for them last season.

"He’s a good character, knows his job, a good professional", Redknapp concluded.
