Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of former Celtic defender Thomas Rogne.

The Norway international has penned a three-year contract at the DW Stadium after completing his medical.

The 23-year-old centre-back plied his skills with the Scottish champions between 2010 and 2013, as he clocked up 50 Scottish Premier League appearances, scoring twice. One of his goals for the Celts came against their Old Firm rivals Rangers in the 2011/12 season.

Rogne also lifted two SPL titles with the Hoops under manager Neil Lennon.

He is now relishing English football, which he considers as something special.

“It’s feels great to have joined the club, the process was quite short which was good and I’m looking forward to getting started now”, Rogne told his new club’s official site.

“It’s an exciting chapter for me; English football is something special and being Norwegian we follow the game over here very closely, so to be a part of it makes me very happy.

“I’ve seen Wigan Athletic play quite a lot when the club was in the Premier League, and obviously the whole of Europe has been speaking about the club after the FA Cup win in May.”

The Latics lifted their first ever FA Cup last season, after beating 2011/12 English Premier League winners Manchester City in the final at Wembley.

The club, however, failed to survive in the English top flight, and will play in the Championship in the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Owen Coyle – the new club boss – has already secured the signings of Chris McCann and Stephen Crainey this summer.
