Major League Soccer side Chivas USA have announced the signing 34-year-old defender and current US team captain, Carlos Bocanegra, on a free transfer.

The United States-based club have made the signing just three days after the centre-back’s contract with Scottish giants Rangers was terminated.

Bocanegra’s thirteen-year long career so far saw him ply his trade under the colours of many different clubs, starting with Chicago Fire before spending stints with Fulham, Rennes and Saint-Etienne and then joining Rangers.

The whole of the 2012/13 season also saw Bocanegra experience playing in La Liga when he joined Racing Santander on loan.

"It is very good news for Chivas USA, as Carlos Bocanegra is a player with great experience, with lots of image and eager to be in California after passing through European football", said Chivas USA supremo Dennis te Kloese.

"Also Bocanegra’s arrival reaffirms and strengthens the identity we seek for Chivas USA, which is a team with outstanding features and it also gives something extra to Chivas USA, apart from his career and being from Los Angeles", Te Kloese added.

Bocanegra has a total 110 caps for the United States under his belt, scoring 14 goals along the way.
