New Leeds United signing Noel Hunt has hailed the Yorkshire club and explained that he is set on giving his best to make sure the side live up to the fans’ expectations.

The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international was snapped up by the Yorkshire giants yesterday on a free transfer, following the expiry of his contract with Reading. He signed a two-year contract at Elland Road and rejoins his former manager Brian McDermott at the club.

Hunt has now insisted that Leeds are one of the “top six” clubs in England, and should return to where they belong – the top flight. He also believes that hard work and the fans’ backing are the keys to achieving that target.

"Expectations are going to be massive here, but you see how big this football club is", Hunt told his new club’s official site.

"It’s one of the top six clubs in England and expectations are massive, but we have to get back where we should be and the only way we will do that is by working hard, and the fans have to get behind us as well.

"The fans can be the 12th man. I always hated playing at Leeds – you knew you were in for a battle, on the field and off it – but I’m looking forward to them getting behind me now.”

Hunt scored a total of 39 goals out of 162 appearances over his five-year stay at Reading. He also lifted the Championship title with the club in the 2011/12 season.

The Royals failed to survive in the English Premier League last season, and were relegated back to the Championship following a bottom three finish.

The player also explained that he did not have any second thoughts about coming to Leeds, and he believes that the club are “sleeping giants that needs to be woken up”.

"I received a lot of messages from fans on Twitter which were very encouraging and there’s no doubt in my mind about coming here. It’s a massive club.

“I think it’s a sleeping giant that needs to be woken up."
