Ryan Giggs has termed it a "great privilege" to be joining his Manchester United manager David Moyes as a player-coach for next season, as announced by the club today.

The appointment comes hot on the heels of news that former Manchester United defender Phil Neville is also set to be offered a coaching role at Old Trafford.

Giggs is the latest backroom appointment under the new Moyes reign, that has already seen three former Everton staff make the move to the Premier League champions.

And Welshman Giggs, who is currently on an 18-month long course to take his UEFA Pro Licence – alongside former team-mate Gary Neville – was delighted to be continuing his coaching education.

Manchester United’s record appearance-maker told the club’s official site: "It’s no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career.

"It’s a great privilege to be appointed a player-coach. I hope I will be able to bring my experience to bear, having been both a player and part of the Manchester United family for so long."

With each passing season, Giggs has been breaking appearances and title records galore, and last season saw him play his 1,000th senior game, fittingly in a Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

And Moyes is hoping Giggs’ longevity can boost his coaching, a fact made more astonishing when considering that players Nick Powell and Phil Jones were not even born when Giggs made his Manchester United debut in 1991.

"His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him an unrivalled perspective on the modern game", Moyes said.

"His career is an example to any aspiring young player and I’m sure that both he and the players will benefit from his new role."
