Ajax have confirmed there is an agreement in principle to sign FC Utrecht defender Mike van der Hoorn on a four-year deal.

The centre-back has been on Ajax’s radar this summer, with one eye on a potential departure for Liverpool target Toby Alderweireld, and the attentions have paid off.

Van Der Hoorn is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Alderweireld, and has already made a name with 31 league appearances last season for Utrecht.

In addition, he also was part of Holland’s European Under-21 Championship side this summer, and Ajax have moved quickly enough to shore up their defence.

"Ajax have reached an outline agreement with FC Utrecht and Mike van der Hoorn about his move to Ajax", a club statement read.

"The agreement is subject to a medical examination and the fulfilment of a number of administrative requirements."

The signing will provide a healthy boost for Liverpool who are keen to boost their own rear guard, since the retirement of the long-serving Jamie Carragher.

Alderweireld is seen as one for the future, having experienced Champions League and Europa League already, but is also courted by Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal.
