New Napoli coach Rafael Benitez has reflected upon his time at fellow Italian side Inter and explained that promises to rebuild the team were broken, something which is the cause of the Nerazzurri’s current slump.

Benitez took charge at the club in the summer of 2010 after Jose Mourinho had just led Inter to a Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble.

Despite winning the Italian Super Cup and Club World Cup, Benitez was sacked in December 2010, with the club struggling in Serie A.

Now he is back in Serie A, having taken charge of Napoli, a side which finished second last season while Inter trailed home in ninth spot.

And Benitez is not in the mood to hear criticism of his Inter reign.

"I prefer to remember the positive things from my time at Inter. For example, we won the Italian Super Cup and the Club World Cup", the Spaniard told Minuto 116.

"Many people wanted to pass judgement without knowing what really happened.

"The truth is that the club and the technical staff got together and planned to rebuild the squad, with the names of new players.

"But the proposals were never followed.

"As I see it, it was the cause of everything that happened at Inter in that year and even perhaps in the following seasons."

Benitez will now aim to make his mark in Italian football with Napoli and prove his Inter critics wrong once and for all.
