Sunderland have stepped up their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini, by submitting a second, improved offer for the 28-year-old.

Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio is a firm fan of the attacking midfielder, who can also operate as a winger, and would dearly love to welcome him to the Stadium of Light this summer.

Sunderland have already seen an offer of €8m for Giaccherini turned down by the Italian champions – and they have now returned with a larger bid.

According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Sunderland’s offer for Giaccherini is now €10m.

Giaccherini represented Italy at the recently concluded Confederations Cup in Brazil, further increasing his stock.

He struggled to command a starting spot in Juventus’ side last season though, leaving a question mark over his future.

Giaccherini is thought to want to remain in Turin however. But it remains to be seen what stance Juventus will take.
