Lazio have given defender Luis Pedro Cavanda a new long-term contract that will keep him with the club until 2018.

Cavanda was expected to switch clubs after his contract expired this summer, with the Belgium international also forced to train with the reserve side.

Sunderland were looking to pick up Cavanda with Paolo Di Canio one of the busiest managers in the transfer window this summer.

However, it appears the Coppa Italia winners have had a change of heart and Cavanda will now continue his career in the Italian capital.

A statement on Lazio’s official site read: "SS Lazio announces that Luis Pedro Cavanda’s contract has been renewed until 2018."

The right-back had joined Lazio as a youth player, having moved to Italy in 2007 from Belgium and he spent parts of his time on loan at Torino and Bari respectively.

He could only manage 14 games in Serie A this season, thanks partly to a long suspension which also ruled him out of Lazio’s cup win over Roma.
