Jan Vertonghen claims he has smoothed the waters with Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas after revealing that he felt like a "stop-gap" option at left-back and wants to play in his natural centre-back role.

The Belgian marshalled the defence at his former club Ajax, but all too often at Tottenham has been slotted in at left-back, much to his chagrin.

However, Vertonghen's comments were noted by Villas-Boas and now the defender has accused the media of blowing up his statements, revealing he has explained himself to the Tottenham manager.

"The media always take statements out of context and interpret them completely differently", bemoaned Vertonghen to Telesport TV.

"But I had a good talk with the coach and everything is fine now.

"I am happy with my role as a left-back."

Vertonghen's Tottenham side went down to a 1-0 defeat at home against Newcastle United in a Premier League clash at the weekend.

The Belgian was disappointed, but is at pains to point out Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul was the difference between the two clubs.

"Krul played well", he said. "He was the best man on the pitch."
