Barcelona playmaker Xavi would love to see the club's old academy graduate Pepe Reina return to the fold as questions over Victor Valdes' successor continue to float.

Valdes will leave Barcelona next summer – Monaco being the most tipped destination club – and the search is well and truly on for a replacement.

Borussia Monchengladbach's Marc-Andre ter Stegen is one of the leading candidates, as is Atletico Madrid's on-loan man Thibaut Courtois.

The 31-year-old Reina is currently on loan at Napoli from Liverpool, but has never made any secret of his liking for Barcelona, where he learnt his trade.

And Xavi, for one, prefers the well-known Reina to Ter Stegen, telling Mundo Deportivo: "It is not up to me but I would like [Reina].

"It is not for me [to say] but beside the friendship, he is an extraordinary keeper and would fit in well because he knows the club."

When asked about Ter Stegen, Xavi was a lot more coy, adding: "We hear a lot about him but I have not seen him play and I have no references."
