A boycott of league games to protest against the French super-tax proposal was never the ultimate solution, the president of the union of professional clubs (UCPF) has claimed.

The UCPF had, last month, agreed to a strike for late November games involving Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs, though the measure has been postponed for now.

The strike – dubbed 'journee blanche' (white day) – was in protest against a proposed 75% tax on incomes above €1m which France is hoping to push through.

The tax is likely to affect many higher-division clubs in France, and the UCPF had urged the government to "not let French football die".

The strike may have been postponed, but UCPF president Jean-Pierre Louvel defended the need to force all parties into finding an alternative to the tax.

Louvel was quoted on L'Equipe as saying: "Constructive dialogue has been initiated.

"It has been agreed that this is not a session that can solve all problems. We decided to trust the mediation and push the journee blanche to a later date.

"Journee blanche is only a means not an end. There was no question of an ultimatum by announcing a new date."
