Jan Vertonghen insists he is happy at his Tottenham Hotspur evolution, but still harbours a desire to play more centrally despite the furore of recent weeks.

Vertonghen landed himself in some hot water after claiming he felt like a "stop-gap" option at Spurs playing left-back, though he has claimed his statements were taken out of context.

Vertonghen continues to play left-back both at Spurs and with Belgium, who play Japan tonight in an international friendly.

"Everyone thinks they're doing me a favour by having me play left but that really is not so", he told a press conference relayed by Het Laatste Nieuws.

"If I could choose, I would always play in the centre. The position of centre-back is my ambition, both at Tottenham and with the Red Devils [Belgium], because I know I deserve that.

"If I am to play in defence, I am the first person who is moved to the left. Two years at Ajax that is the little story of my career.

"But all in all, I am satisfied with my development at Tottenham."

Vertonghen has already made 11 appearances for Tottenham in the Premier League while he also got on the scoresheet in the Europa League in last month's clash against Sheriff Tiraspol.
