Barcelona will have to fork out an exit clause worth €25m if they ever want to sign Luiz Gustavo before the 2018 contract deadline, it has emerged.

According to Bild, Wolfsburg have taken to adding the clause on Gustavo, who only signed for them this summer from Bayern Munich.

However, his performances attracted transfer speculation with Barcelona believed to be eyeing a January move.

Gustavo had brushed off any links – "I'm here and I have a long contract" – but the information on the release clause amount is sure to reopen talk.

Gustavo's €20m move from Bayern Munich came despite then-interest from Barcelona, as well as Arsenal, Chelsea, Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller, however, revealed in September that the Brazilian would have been too expensive to snap up.

"Such transfers, in terms of transfer fee and salary, we at Bayer 04 can neither do now nor in the future," Voller had said. "We cannot compete with Wolfsburg."

The midfielder has made 10 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, with one goal as well, after a summer which saw Confederations Cup triumph with Brazil.
