Real Madrid are hoping to give their fans one of many Christmas presents in terms of renewals, with Xabi Alonso high on manager Carlo Ancelotti's agenda.
It was revealed yesterday that Los Blancos had begun discussions for the injured Sami Khedira to renew his contract until 2018.
And Alonso, who only recently returned from back-to-back injuries, is now the priority for Ancelotti given the current deal expires next summer and that he would be free to negotiate a pre-contract from next year.
The former Liverpool man was understood to have given a gentleman's agreement on a two-year extension with an option year.

And Ancelotti yesterday told esRadio: "As a Christmas present, I'd like the extension of Xabi Alonso.
"He is key to our current good run of form. He is a very important player; he has quality and impressive experience. His return has been very good for the team.
"I'm not worried about the situation because I think everyone knows it is important. The club is talking to him to extend his contract. I hope he is happy here and that he will extend."
Alonso made his return from injury on 30th October, and has racked up five La Liga appearances and two Champions League games.
