West Ham assistant manager Neil McDonald has insisted that Andy Carroll is a vital member of the club's side ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against the striker's former club Newcastle United on Saturday.

Carroll, who has been suffering with a foot injury, made his first appearance of the season in the Hammers’ 2-0 win over Cardiff City at the weekend.

The former Liverpool man came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute, with his side winning 1-0 at time, and provided the assist for West Ham’s second goal in the closing stages of the match as the Upton Park outfit lifted themselves out of the relegation zone to the 17th spot with 18 points from 21 games.

And McDonald explained that Carroll brings a lot to Sam Allardyce’s side and that the club expect to see a lot more of the 25-year-old in their upcoming matches.

"Andy is on the training field today, working really hard on his fitness as well as the football aspect of it", he said at a press conference.

"He contributes so much, holding the ball up, flicking it on, getting on the end of crosses and we're looking forward to seeing more."
