Manchester United are looking at signing French defender Philippe Mexes from AC Milan this summer.

According to Italian outlet Sport Mediaset, the Red Devils are running the rule over Mexes as they bid to inject new life into their backline in the summer.

The reigning English champions will have to make do without Nemanja Vidic next season, the Serbian having confirmed an exit from the club, while Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have been heavily linked with following the 32-year-old out of the door.

Mexes currently turns out in Serie A with AC Milan, the 31-year-old having played his football in Italy since switching from Auxerre to Roma in 2004.

Manchester United have been linked with a number of defenders in recent weeks and Mexes is thought to be at the forefront of the club's thoughts.

The Frenchman is likely to miss out on Champions League football with Milan next season and, with Manchester United appearing set for the same fate in England, would not be sacrificing the blue ribbon tournament if he did make the move.

Mexes has played eleven times in Serie A for Milan this term and has a contract with the Rossoneri which runs until 2015.
