Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that he is “proud” with his side’s performance in their Champions League Round of 16 second leg 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich last night.

The Gunners, who lost the first leg at the Emirates Stadium 2-0, were 1-0 down in the 54th minute at the Allianz Arena, courtesy of a Bastian Schweinsteiger goal.

Wenger’s side however scored the equaliser just three minutes later when Lukas Podolski found the back of the net against his former club.

And the Frenchman, who is of the opinion that Arsenal matched their German opponents in both legs, felt his side had opportunities to score again in the latter stages of last night’s contest.

“Over the two games quality and spirit-wise we were absolutely at the level that is requested”, he was quoted as saying by the UEFA’s official site.

“I'm very proud of the spirit we showed tonight, we gave everything until the end. In the last 20 minutes we had situations where the final ball was not always there, but the situations were there to score a goal.”

Wenger further added that goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s expulsion in the first leg had a huge impact on the outcome of the tie.

“Overall you can see the impact of the sending-off.”

Arsenal will next play their fierce north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.
