Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes that the match against Liverpool will be an important one for the team as they prepare to fight for fourth place in the Premier League this season.

The team from Manchester are currently placed sixth in the table, having played one match more than Roberto Martinez's Everton, who trail them on goal difference.

As the season nears its business end, every point can prove to be vital and in such circumstances the match against the Reds has taken on renewed importance.

The Red Devils had to suffer heartbreak as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Liverpool earlier this season at Anfield, thanks to a goal from striker Daniel Sturridge.

The match on the 16th will therefore be a chance for David Moyes' men to seek redemption.

"It’s a game we cannot afford to lose, and one we really must win if we’re to make any inroads in the race for fourth place", Pallister told his club's official site.

Brendan Rodgers' men have hit good form this season and are currently placed second in the standings, behind league leaders Chelsea, but the 48-year-old feels that Manchester United should continue to be positive about the outcome.

"Liverpool have been flying and their strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are bang in form, but we should be positive because we have the players to get the result we want, and we’re on our home turf as well."
