The teams went in locked at 0-0 at half-time, but Lionel Messi broke the deadlock in the second half, scoring in the 67th minute.

Manchester City did pull one back through Kompany, who scored in the 89th minute. However, Barcelona ensured they would win the game on the night, as well as the tie, as Dani Alves bagged a second for his side in injury time.

Kompany though was taking the positives, insisting that Manchester City gave all they had.

"We've got nothing left in the tank, we gave everything. We could have scored earlier which would have changed the game", he told Sky Sports.

"You have to take your half chances against the best teams. Over the course of the two games there was not much between the sides. Lionel Messi is incredible player but outside of that it was even.

"Only the winners get remembered but it's only our third season in the Champions League. The way we have played means we should fear nobody next season and our time will come."
