Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari believes that the English club need to play more attacking football against Olympiacos in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 game on Wednesday, if they want to overcome a 2-0 deficit.

The Greek league leaders defeated the English side 2-0 in the first leg in Athens and Manchester United are now looking for a win at Old Trafford to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Red Devils also lost their Premier League game 3-0 against Liverpool on Sunday and Macari believes that winger Danny Welbeck should be the ideal choice to replace Juan Mata, who is ineligible to feature in the Champions League, to sharpen the attack up front.

"On Wednesday night, I would play with Danny Welbeck, [Robin] van Persie, [Wayne] Rooney and [Adnan] Januzaj, four attack-minded players, because we need to score goals", Macari told Manchester United’s site.

"We need to get ourselves back into that tie, and then we obviously need to score another couple to qualify.

"It's not a gamble", he added.

"Let's hope we're sitting here on Wednesday night, having forgotten about the Liverpool game, and looking forward to the draw for the next round of the Champions League."

Two Steven Gerrard penalties and a late strike form Luis Suarez ensured that Liverpool came out on top on Sunday at Old Trafford, in what was David Moyes’ men’s fifth home defeat in this league season.

But despite a series of forgettable performances at the Theatre of Dreams this season, Macari insists that there is no better place to play football for Manchester United, and also thanked the fans for their immense support in these testing times.

"Old Trafford is the best place to be", the 64-year-old said.

"You're here with 70,000 supporting you and cheering you on, and I would say the crowd have stuck behind them this season.

"The Stretford End was fantastic. There were one or two groans because we were playing Liverpool, but this is the best place to be."
