Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew escaped a hefty stadium ban after he apologised for his on-field actions against Hull City midfielder David Meyler immediately after the match, it has emerged.

The Magpies’ boss was found guilty of headbutting Hull City midfielder Meyler during his side’s 4-1 win against the Tigers on 1st March, and was subsequently handed a three-match stadium and a four-match touchline ban along with a £60,000 fine.

An independent FA commission said that they had earlier considered a five-match stadium-ban, but Pardew’s apology and the fact that he meant the player no harm, made them reconsider their decision.

"Based on the mitigation presented together with the action taken by both the club and Mr Pardew, the regulatory commission came to the conclusion that the appropriate sanction set out was fair, reasonable and proportionate", the commission said as via the BBC.

This is not the first time that the 52-year-old has been banned for his on-field antics. In 2012, the Englishman was handed a two-match ban for pushing an assistant referee in a game against Tottenham Hotspur.

He has also been in the news for verbally abusing Manauel Pellegrini in January and a touchline row with Arsene Wenger back in 2006.
