Patrice Evra has insisted that Manchester United are “still alive” after they went through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League following their 3-0 win over Olympiacos last night.

David Moyes’ side had a tough task at hand after losing the first leg 2-0 in Greece – but Robin van Persie’s hat-trick at Old Trafford sealed the deal for the Red Devils as they won the Round of 16 tie 3-2 on aggregate.

And Evra, who hailed Van Persie’s display against Olympiacos, also lauded his side’s trademark team-spirit that enabled them to revive their Champions League campaign.

“Well done to Robin, he scored a hat-trick and I remember the night we won the league against Aston Villa and he scored a hat-trick, and we needed our big players”, he was quoted as saying by the UEFA’s official site.

“They stepped up tonight, [not only] him and Wayne but all the team – the star was the team today, it was not only one player.

“It is a tough competition, but everyone thought we were out tonight and we just showed Man United are still alive.”

The French international also praised the Manchester United faithful for sticking with the team despite the club enduring a tough season.

And Evra was pleased after his side gave the supporters something to cheer about last night.

“After we lost against a rival like Liverpool 3-0 at home and the fans were still singing for us, when I got home I was so sad – I was happy the fans supported us until the end, but I was so hurt inside and couldn’t wait for this game to give something back.

"We've had a tough season and they are fantastic.”
