Jose Mourinho believes that Arsenal's 6-0 defeat to Chelsea today represents defeat in the Gunners' most important match of the season.

Chelsea were on the ball from the start of the contest and 4-0 up by half-time, with Arsenal having had Kieran Gibbs sent off in the 15th minute, at which time Mourinho's men were already 2-0 up.

Gibbs counted himself unlucky to have been shown red as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain committed the offence, but the referee sent off the wrong man as he awarded Chelsea a penalty, which Eden Hazard scored.

Chelsea added a further two goals to their total in the second half, tearing Arsenal apart and running out comfortable 6-0 winners.

With just eight games left for Arsenal in the Premier League now, Mourinho believes that Arsene Wenger's men have tasted defeat in their most important game of the season.

"This was the most important match of the season for Arsenal", Mourinho was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"For us it was an important game", he added.

Arsenal are now seven points behind Chelsea, who top the table, in the Premier League, but do have a game in hand on Mourinho's men.

The defeat also marks a disappointment for Wenger on his 1,000th match in charge of Arsenal.
