Everton boss Roberto Martinez has hailed Ross Barkley’s performance in his side’s 3-0 win over Newcastle United last night.

The 20-year-old, who netted the winner in his side’s 3-2 win over Swansea City at the weekend, scored a gem of a goal to give the Toffees a 22nd-minute lead at St. James' Park.

Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman scored the other goals for Everton as they leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur into fifth spot with 57 points from 30 games.

And Martinez, who was impressed with Barkley’s strike, also lauded the youngster for his overall display against Newcastle.

"It takes a special type of player.I think it was a unique goal that only Ross can score”, the manager told his club’s official site.

“With the technical ability and the physicality that you need to travel that distance, it is a unique trait of Ross.

"From that point on it could have been an ‘easy' performance for him but he worked as hard as ever and he did his role for the team well and that shoes the focus that he has."

Barkley, whose present contract with Everton runs until 2016, has been in good form this season, scoring six goals in 31 appearances in all competitions for the club.

The midfielder’s rich vein of form has also resulted in him being capped three times by England.
