Championship club Watford have signed former Liverpool player Albert Riera on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The Spanish international, who was released by the Turkish club Galatasaray in January this year, will be moving to Serie A club Udinese in the summer but will play for the Hornets in the interim period.

The Italian club and Watford are both owned by the Pozzo family and a deal to loan the midfielder back to England in the summer might also be on the cards.

Riera joined English giants Liverpool in 2008 after serving three seasons at La Liga side Espanyol, before he was sold to Greek side Olympiacos in 2010.

He later signed a four-year contract with Galatasaray for €3 million in 2011 and went on to make 60 league appearances for the Yellow-Reds before he agreed to rescind the deal after just three years and left the club for €750.000.

The 31-year-old has also featured in 16 games for Spain and has four goals to his name.
