West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce expressed his delight after his side defeated Hull City 2-1 at Upton Park last night.

The Hammers went ahead in the 26th minute, courtesy of Mark Noble’s spot-kick following Allan McGregor’s foul on Mohamed Diame inside the box, which also saw the custodian receive his marching orders.

The Tigers however, equalised in the 49th minute when Tom Huddlestone’s free-kick flew into the back of the net after striking Nikica Jelavic’s shoulder.

But a James Chester own-goal just five minutes later gave West Ham the lead again as Allardyce’s men saw off the remaining part of the match to end their streak of three consecutive losses.

The win also helped West Ham to overtake Hull in the league standings as the Hammers are now 11th with 34 points from 31 games, two places and a point ahead of Steve Bruce’s side.

And Allardyce hailed his side’s important victory over the KC Stadium outfit.

"The three defeats on the trot made us a bit tentative out there, but we got what we needed and that's a big three points against one of our rivals in the table”, the manager told his club’s official site.

“We've gone above them now and they're behind us and that was the critical point of what this game was all about.”
