Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has said that he feels embarrassed to step out of his house because of the disastrous season the club have had so far.

The defending champions, seventh in the Premier League, are 18 points behind leaders Chelsea and are struggling for a Europa League spot as they lost to rivals Liverpool and Manchester City at Old Trafford over the last two weeks.

David Moyes’ men have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Swansea City and look set to miss out on next year’s Champions League unless they beat Bayern Munich in their last-eight game and go on to win the European title this year.

And Ferdinand, who has had 12 successful years with the club, is finding it difficult to become acquainted with the recent miserable results.

"I don't want to go out when the game has finished", Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"I don't want to take my kids to school and listen to things that I think I'm hearing or see people look at me in a different way because we've lost a game.

"I don't want to go out and fill my car up with petrol or go to the shops or anything. It's embarrassing.

"Ideally you want to play the next game the next night and get it out of the way so you can go out and get a win and go out with your chest out and feel more comfortable because it's personal.

"You think everyone is talking about you and the result and what's going on with the club and the form and you don't want to live like that.

"You want to walk freely and comfortably”, the 35-year-old Englishman added.

Manchester United have already lost six league games at home this season, but will look to avoid another defeat when the host Aston Villa on Saturday.
