Manchester United manager David Moyes was pleased after Juan Mata scored his first goal for the club during his side’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa at the weekend.

The Spaniard, who joined the Red Devils from Premier League rivals Chelsea during the winter transfer window, scored his maiden goal in an Manchester United shirt in his 10th appearances for the English champions.

And Moyes, who revealed that Mata’s goalscoring prowess was a big reason behind Manchester United signing the 25-year-old, explained that it was about time for the midfielder to open his goal account with the Old Trafford outfit.

"I think Mata is popular with the fans and the players because everyone can see what a good footballer he is", the manager told his club’s official site.

"I think he’s played well and really helped us and his goals were one of the reasons why we wanted to sign him.

"He’s always had a record of scoring goals and I thought he came very close against West Ham. There were signs that it was coming and, thankfully, he got his first.”

Mata, who is contracted with Manchester United until 2018, scored 32 goals in 135 appearances in all competitions for his former employers Chelsea.

He has also found the back of the net nine times in 32 matches for Spain.
