Napoli are stepping up their plans for the summer, having sent a scout to England over the weekend to watch three defensive targets in action.

According to Sky Italia, those on the scout's watch list were Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, Liverpool stopper Martin Skrtel and Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen.

Rafael Benitez's men have been linked with the trio before and the latest scouting trip is evidence the Azzurri have not lost sight of their targets.

The Serie A outfit are desperate to sign a new centre-back and any one of the trio would be welcome in Italy.

Vermaelen has been relegated to the Arsenal bench for much of the season, only being in action recently due to an injury to Laurent Koscielny, and he has admitted he cannot say whether he will extend a contract which expires in 2015 with the Gunners.

Skrtel and Vertonghen meanwhile have been regularly called upon by Liverpool and Tottenham respectively and it is not clear whether either club would agree to do business with Napoli.
