Jose Mourinho is of the opinion that Chelsea paid the price for defensive mistakes in their 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final first leg last night.

The Blues fell behind to an early Ezequiel Lavezzi strike at the Parc des Princes and although Eden Hazard equalised in the first half itself, a 61st minute David Luiz own goal and a injury-time Javier Pastore goal handed the French outfit a big advantage going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge on 8th April.

And Mourinho, who was displeased with his side’s defensive display against PSG, branded the manner in which Chelsea conceded the third goal as a “joke.”

“We made defensive mistakes, individual defensive mistakes. We paid the price”, the Portuguese told his club’s official site.

“The ball went to Lavezzi for the first goal. Top player, top striker – it's like this at this level. We had the chance to go 2-1 up at the end of the first half.

“Then we scored an own goal and the third goal was a joke. It was not a goal, it was joke. We enjoyed the third goal with Pastore because it was Pastore and us.”

Mourinho further added that Chelsea’s individual defensive frailties were the prime reason for their loss in the first leg.

“It's difficult for us to score goals, especially when the games are tight. When you make defensive mistakes you are in trouble, that's simple,” he added.

“We made individual mistakes in areas where for the whole season the guys have performed and they have the right to do that.”
